When planning your summer road trips in Louisiana, be sure to plan a stop in Ascension Parish for authentic Louisiana seafood. From casual cafés to fine dining, there are plenty of options waiting for you to discover. One of our favorite stops for great food, atmosphere, and live music is Mike Anderson’s Seafood Restaurant in Gonzales, Louisiana.

Mike Anderson’s Seafood Restaurant was established in 1975. After a legendary college football career as an All-American linebacker for the LSU Tigers, Mike Anderson retired from the world of athletics and decided to go into the restaurant business.

With a thorough understanding of what Capital City-dwellers crave, Mike opened a casual seafood restaurant and market on Highland Road called Mike Anderson’s College Town Seafood & Oyster Bar. The small restaurant served mostly po’boys and fresh and boiled seafood, but it built up a solid reputation for great food.

As sales and clientele continued to grow, the menu expanded to include seafood gumbo and shrimp salad among other South Louisiana delicacies. When the restaurant began to outgrow its space, the business moved to its current location on West Lee Drive and changed its name to Mike Anderson’s Seafood Restaurant and Oyster Bar.

Today, more than 40 years later, the journey of Louisiana greatness continues with the restaurant’s two new co-owners—Harry and Chip Robert, who are the brother-in-law and nephew, respectively, of the eponymous restaurant’s founder, Mike Anderson, Sr.

The family-owned cooperative is heavily involved in the restaurant’s second, franchise-owned location in Gonzales, which is attached to the Clarion Inn Conference Center. The new location features the restaurant’s fantastic signature oyster dishes and also hosts live music on the patio.

Both locations have menus packed with classic Bayou State fare. Appetizers include delicacies like Chargrilled Crab Claws, Fried Alligator, and Crabmeat Stuffed Mushrooms. In addition to fried, boiled, and chargrilled seafood, Mike Anderson’s specialties include Cajun Crawfish Fettucine, Crabmeat au Gratin, and many more decadent Cajun and Creole dishes.

“When I started the company, I wanted to make sure that customers left full and went home with leftovers. I wanted them to get their money’s worth,” says founder Mike Anderson. “Now 35 years later, people are still returning because we continue to strive for consistently good food, dependable service, and to make sure the customers get their money’s worth.”
